Federer, Nadal on collision course in Madrid
Tennis Betting Lines
05/14/2010 - Madrid, Spain (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - World No. 1 superstar Roger Federer and former top-ranked Spanish hero Rafael Nadal are on a collision course to meet in this weekend's final at the $3.6 million Madrid Open, a clay- court French Open tune-up.
The top-seeded and reigning Madrid champion Federer had to come from behind to beat improving Latvian Ernests Gulbis 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in 1 hour, 53 minutes at the Magic Box. Federer avenged a loss against Gulbis in Rome just two weeks ago.
Federer dismissed the 21-year-old Gulbis with the help of four service breaks, compared to only two breaks for the Latvian loser.
The amazing Federer topped Nadal in last year's marquee finale here, also captured this event in 2006, and was the Madrid runner-up in 2007. He and Nadal could meet in the final again here on Sunday.
Meanwhile, a second-seeded Nadal won his 13th straight match, all on clay, with a 6-1, 6-3 pasting of 12th-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils on Day 6. Rafa cruised in 78 minutes by breaking Monfils' serve four times while holding his serve throughout.
"In the first set, I played at a very high level," Nadal said. "This is the toughest tournament for me, the conditions are the most difficult of the year for me on clay, but I'm fine."
The red-hot Nadal is seeking his third title in three events, having recently captured championships in Monte Carlo and Rome. The four- time French Open champ was the Madrid winner back in 2005.
Nadal, seeking a record 18th Masters title, can move back up to No. 2 in the world with a win here on Saturday. Nadal and Andre Agassi currently share the record with 17 Masters titles apiece.
The fiery Nadal's semifinal opponent will be fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, who drilled Austrian Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-1.
